AI agent or chatbot: which one does your business need?
A chatbot answers questions in a window; an agent reads what arrives, acts in your tools and hands uncertain cases to a person. Which one fits which Monaco business, with examples from the inbox, the phone and WhatsApp.
The two words are used as if they meant the same thing. They do not, and choosing the wrong one is the most common way a first AI project disappoints.
A chatbot talks
A chatbot sits in a window on your site or on WhatsApp and answers questions from your own content: opening hours, how to book, what you offer, in the visitor’s language. It is useful when the same questions arrive by the dozen and the answers are already written somewhere. It does not act: it does not book the table, file the email or update the CRM. If someone sells you a chatbot as “an AI that handles your clients”, ask what happens after the conversation.
An agent acts
An agent reads what arrives (an email, a call, a document, a form), does the repetitive part according to rules you set (files it, extracts the data, drafts the reply, books the slot, updates the record), and hands anything it is unsure about to a person with the facts already gathered. It lives in your tools, not in a window. Most of the value in a small company is here, because most of the hours are in the doing, not in the answering.
Which one for which business
A restaurant or a shop with many identical questions and a simple booking: a chatbot, connected to the booking tool so it can also act. A real-estate agency, a yacht broker, a clinic, a firm: an agent on the inbox first, because the enquiries need qualification, a quote and a record, not just an answer. A company whose phone rings all day: a voice agent, which is an agent that listens. Many Monaco businesses end up with both, and the chatbot is the cheap, visible part of a system whose real work happens behind it.
The question that decides
What should happen after the message? If the answer is “nothing, the person has their answer”, a chatbot. If the answer is “a quote, a booking, a record, a file, a follow-up”, an agent. Most directors, asked that question, discover they wanted an agent.
Two questions.
Can a chatbot become an agent later?
Yes, by connecting it to your tools and giving it rules for acting. We often start with the chatbot for the visible questions and add the agent behind it.
Does an agent reply to clients on its own?
Only if you decide so, for the kinds of message you choose. By default it drafts and a person approves.

AI agents in Monaco
An agent is software that can read, decide what to do next within rules you set, use your tools to do it, and ask a person when it should. On this site we usually say assistant or automation, because that is how your team will treat it.
AI chatbot for your website, Monaco
Not a script with buttons, and not a chatbot that makes things up. An assistant that knows your pages, your prices if you publish them, your hours and your rules, answers in the visitor’s language, and hands over to WhatsApp or a person the moment it should.
AI phone answering in Monaco
The phone rings during check-in, during a consultation, at seven in the evening. The voice assistant picks up, answers what it can, books what it should, and passes anything else to a person with a written summary. Nobody books elsewhere because nobody answered.
Start with a 30-minute call. Keep what it finds.
You tell us where the hours go. We tell you which two or three tasks to automate first, in a short written note. Free, in English or French.
